For those who are just discovering Triple One, who are you, and how did Triple One come together?
Triple One! We're a four-piece from the Inner-West of Sydney, making music. Marty & Billy went to school together and started doing tunes in a garage. Marty was then forced to rap battle Obi at a house party, Obi put up a good fight and he was welcomed into the fold. A little bit after that, Obi met Dom while drinking beers in a park, found out he could sing, and the group was formed.
How would you describe your sound/style?
Honestly, it changes with every track! I guess a lot of our early material would be classified as part of the whole Soundcloud rap movement, but listening through our catalogue, you'll find bits of everything from metal and punk to pop and electronica. Most of our music is rooted in hip-hop though, that's what unites it all. We always aim to reinvent ourselves with every release and ensure that our music doesn't sound like anything else that's being offered at the time.
Your shows are always packed full of energy; the last AUS tours looked insane! What have you got planned for Splendour? any upcoming shows before that?
Live shows are the crux of the band, we love performing and were lucky enough to play five sold-out shows along the East Coast. Like most Australian bands, Splendour in the Grass is a massive deal for us and will be one of our biggest achievements to date. We don't want to reveal too much too soon, but make sure you catch our set in Byron... and yes, we'll be hitting the road a fair bit throughout 2020.
How does it feel seeing fans with Triple One tattoos?
It still blows our minds every time. People from all over the country have 111 tattoos, we toured Europe and there was a bunch of them there as well. It's awesome to see that our music can have that much of an impact on our fans. We're currently in the midst of running a 111 tattoo competition, so stay tuned...
Marty - What and where was the best pickle you've ever eaten?
Pickled onions should always be eaten straight out of the jar, and only if you drink all the juice also.
Who comes up with the idea for the red Dickies Coveralls?
We have always liked wearing uniforms onstage, from dungarees to full tracksuits. One day, we started looking for full-body suits to wear onstage, and eventually found the Dickies ones to be perfect because of the baggy fit. A lot of people were saying that we copied Brockhampton with those outfits. They were wrong, we were actually copying Slipknot. We debuted the red coveralls at Listen Out festival and a lot of people now identify those outfits with the band. Shoutout to our Perth mates at StreetX for their customisation help.
Dijon - How'd your name come about?
Dijon adds the melodic element to our music, he's like the condiment that ties the whole dish together - hence the name.
What's Triple One up to for the rest of the year?
We have a new single 'Handyman' dropping in the very near future, along with a video. After that, we have Splendour in the Grass and a few surprises wedged in between. Shoutout to everyone who's been supporting us, love you all.
