The Beginning

In 1918, founders C.N. Williamson and Colonel E.E. Dickie began a hat manufacturing business — that was the beginning.

In 1922, they shifted to tailoring clothing for workers. This durable workwear went on to influence the uniforms of the service industry.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower valued this style and had it developed for US soldiers.
During World War II, the US government commissioned us to produce 9 million military uniforms, temporarily halting consumer production.

For more than half a century, the 874 Work Pants have been worn by workers in every trade — made from durable cotton/polyester that stands up to scrapes from concrete, steel, wood, and asphalt.

In 1967, we launched the 874® Twill Work Pants. Made from a refined blend of 65% polyester and 35% cotton, they quickly became a bestseller — celebrated for their durability and tear-resistance — and remain our most popular work pants to this day.
1986
By the late 1970s and into the '80s, a more free and open spirit was sweeping America, and people began wearing Dickies as fashion rather than just workwear. To meet that demand, we began releasing items with bold colors and new styles.
1990
Their ability to withstand the scrape of asphalt without tearing earned recognition among skaters. By the mid-1990s, Dickies had found support in West Coast culture and was influencing the world.
2000
By the 2000s, we had expanded to over 100 countries, becoming a globally loved brand of workwear and everyday clothing.
